Oil-injected rotary screw air compressors represent the backbone of modern industrial utility infrastructure. Unlike dry-running screw compressors, the injection of synthetic or food-grade oil into the compression chamber serves three vital thermodynamic functions: cooling, sealing, and lubrication.
During the compression cycle, the air's temperature increases adiabatically. Direct oil injection acts as a thermal heat sink, absorbing a significant portion of this heat. This allows the process to run close to an isothermal compression path, which is thermodynamically more efficient. Additionally, the oil forms a microscopic hydrodynamic seal in the running clearances between the male and female rotors, and between the rotors and the stator housing. This sealing eliminates internal gas bypass, ensuring consistent volumetric output even at high working pressures.
