Single-stage compression systems frequently experience thermodynamic loss as they compress air to high target pressures in one continuous phase. To address this energy gap, double-stage screw air compressors segment the process into two steps, bringing performance closer to the ideal isothermal compression curve.
In a single-stage system, compression generates substantial heat, raising temperature and volume. According to Boyle's and Charles' laws, hotter air requires more power to compress. By splitting compression into two phases and injecting cooling oil between them, we reduce the air temperature before the second stage.
